800 wins

MORRISTOWN, Tenn. — Dave Kragel, who played at Corning, Southwestern Community College for Hall of Famer Ron “Fox” Clinton, and Oklahoma State, recently recorded his 800th victory as coach of the Walters State Lady Senators.

Walters State clinched the No. 1 seed in the NJCAA Region VII Tournament with a 75-64 victory over Volunteer State. In the process, Kragel gained his 800th victory in his 35th season at Walters State.

The Lady Senators finished the regular season 23-1 overall and 15-0 in the Tennessee Community College Athletic Association. In the regional opener Wednesday, Walters State routed Columbia State, 72-31.

The Lady Senators have been ranked 24 of Kragel’s 35 seasons and appeared in eight national tournaments. Kragel has been named TJCCAA coach of the year 16 times. He ranks third in total wins among active coaches in the NJCAA.

Halls award

MURRAY — Murray senior Austin Halls was presented with the Central Iowa Sports Award for Male High School Athlete of the Year Thursday afternoon at Murray High School.

Girls banquet

The Creston girls basketball banquet will be held 6 p.m. Tuesday, March 12. Families are asked to bring a main dish and a salad or dessert.

Beverages, cups, paper plates and table service will be provided.
