Robert Erickson — Mount Ayr

Robert Erickson, 77, of Mount Ayr died March 15, 2013, in Decatur County, from injuries sustatined in a car accident.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, March 20, at the United Methodist Church in Mount Ayr. The Rev. Skip Rushing will officiate. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery in Mount Ayr with military rites conducted by Ringgold Post No. 172 and Iowa Honor Guard Unit. Open visitation will be noon to 8 p.m. Tuesday with family present 5 to 8 p.m. at Watson-Armstrong Funeral Home, 205 W. Monroe St., Mount Ayr. Memorials may be directed to Mount Ayr Methodist Men’s Group, American Legion and Lions Club. Online condolences may be left at www.watsonarmstrongfh.com.

Robert Allen Erickson, son of Helen (Stroup) and Dale Erickson, was born July 14, 1935, at Harkin Hospital in Osceola.

Robert graduated from Lorimor High School in 1953.

On Dec. 6, 1957, Robert married Shirley Strange at the Presbyterian Church in Creston.

After graduating, he went into the U.S. Army and was stationed in Japan for 18 months.

When Robert returned home, he farmed for a short time, and because of health problems, went to work in Creston at a lumber yard as an office manager/bookkeeper. When that store closed, Robert moved to Mount Ayr to work for Roe Implement. He also worked as a secretary manager for Ringgold Mutual.

In 1973, Royce Dredge and Robert bought Roe Implement.

After it closed, Robert worked in the auditor’s office and at Harvey Brothers and Glendenning Motors. He then went back to IH at Vetter’s until retirement.

Robert was a member of the United Methodist Church, where he was active with Methodist Men, serving as president and treasurer, and teaching youths. He was active in the Lions Club, American Legion Ringgold Post No. 172 and Ringgold Mutual Board. In his early years, he was leader for Weeblos and Boy Scouts, where he had several boys earn their Eagle Scout. He was a 4-H leader and served on the Civil Service Committee and Veterans Affairs.

Robert is survived by his wife Shirley (Strange) Erickson of Mount Ayr; son Mark Allen (Brenda) Erickson of New Virginia; granddaughters, Alexi and Toriann Erickson and great-grandson Myles Allen Carter Erickson, all of New Virginia; sister Barbara (Garn) Iverson of Las Vegas, Nev.; nephews, Hal (Terrie) Iverson of Gilbert, Ariz., and Cyle (Stacy) Iverson of Las Vegas, Nev.; great-niece Jena; great-nephews, Alex and Mitchell; and father-in-law Don Strange of Mount Ayr.

Robert was preceded in death by his parents; mother-in-law Unity Strange; and grandson Jacobie Erickson.
