MARYVILLE, Mo. — Mel Tjeerdsma is back at Northwest Missouri State University, as director of athletics.

The announcement came Wednesday afternoon during a press conference on the NWMSU campus in Maryville. Tjeerdsma, who retired from the football sideline after the 2010 season, takes over for Wren Baker, who left last month to be the deputy athletic director for external affairs at the University of Memphis.

Tjeerdsma was head football coach at Northwest Missouri State for 17 seasons, 1994-2010, leading the Bearcats to a record of 183-43 with three national championships, seven national championship game appearances, and 12 MIAA championships.
