Southwest takes 4th in IBCA series

GRIMES — Southwest Iowa went 0-2 to place fourth in the Iowa Basketball Coaches Association All-Star Series Saturday at Dallas Center-Grimes High School.

Three area all-staters were part of the Southwest Iowa team — center Alex Welsch and guard Brad Baudler of Nodaway Valley, and Murray guard Austin Halls.

Southeast Iowa made 15 3-pointers in rolling to a 110-78 victory over Southwest Iowa in the first round. Steven Soukup of Danville poured in 25 points and Iowa City West’s Jeremy Morgan added 21 for the winners.

West Des Moines Valley’s Peter Jok, named Iowa’s Mr. Basketball, led Southwest Iowa with 16 points. Baudler scored six points, Welsch tallied five and Halls had two.

In the third-place game, Northeast Iowa edged Southwest Iowa, 78-72. Halls had nine points, Welsch dropped in six and Baudler had two. Adam Courtney of Guthrie Center led the team with 15 points. Jok tallied seven.

Peyton Plagge of West Fork led Northeast with 19 points, and C.J. Mason of MFL-Mar-Mac added 13.

In the championship game, Southeast Iowa surpassed the century mark again with a 110-81 victory over Northwest Iowa. Rylan Murray of West Branch netted 23 points for the champions. Gaith Pope of Mount Pleasant and Soukup each tallied 18. Marcel Dunson of Sioux City East and Luke Lenhart of Storm Lake St. Mary’s each had 14 for Northwest.

In the girls championship game, Aubrey Norville of Lewis Central had seven points for Southwest Iowa in a 79-69 loss to Northwest Iowa. Also playing for Southwest were Lexi Albrecht of Carroll Kuemper and Central Decatur’s Sadie Green.
