Maitlen wins long jump at Lamoni

LAMONI — Brianna Maitlen got her senior track season off to a good start by winning the long jump and taking second in the 55-meter hurdles Saturday at the Bruce Jenner Invitational.

Having missed the Central Invitational indoor meet, this was Maitlen’s first competition of the 2013 season. With nearly half of the team gone on spring break, coach Clay Arnold said Maitlen’s performance was one of the highlights.

She won the long jump with an effort of 15-2.25, and ran a 9.50 for second place in the 55-meter hurdles after running 9.74 in the prelims.

“This was her first time long-jumping, and to go 15-2 to win it was encouraging,” Arnold said. “We’ve just been hurdling in the gym, with one day outside. She ran real well and improved from the prelims to the finals. She looked real smooth.”

Maitlen also ran on one of two Panther 4x400 relay units, helping a group including Nicole Haley, Taylor Hudson and Brittney Minson in a fourth-place time of 4:47.04.

Freshman Amber Castillo and sophomore Minson also made the finals of the 55-meter hurdles, finishing fifth and sixth, respectively, by running sub-10 seconds in the finals.

Minson also filled a spot in the third-place 4 x 800 relay. The Panthers ran 11:49, led by a 2:40.71 leadoff carry by freshman Taylor Briley. Briley also had a team-best 1:08.26 leg to start the fifth-place 4x400 relay and 29.75 second leg on the fifth-place 4x200 relay.

“Several freshmen improved from the first meet at Central. Taylor has been pushing hard and been really focused in practice,” Arnold said. “Sydney Suiter was 12th in the 55 meters in 8.43 as our fastest girl in that event.”

Arnold was impressed with Minson’s workload.

“Brittney ran the 55 hurdles, then helped us fill out the 4x800, and right after that had to run the 55-hurdles finals,” Arnold said. “She was still able to run a good time.”

Junior Chelcee Downing was fourth in the 400 meters in 1:09.72 and 15th in the 55 meters 8.53.

The Hawkeye 10 Southern Division Meet scheduled at Red Oak was cancelled today. The Panther girls hope to defend their team championship Thursday at the Clarke Invitational in Osceola.
