Margaret Kernen Villisca

Margaret Kernen, 80, of Villisca died March 20, 2013, at Montgomery County Memorial Hospital in Red Oak, after a battle with pancreatic cancer.

Mass of Christian Burial was Saturday, March 23, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Villisca. Interment was in Nodaway Cemetery. Wolfe Funeral Home, Villisca, was in charge of arrangements. Memorials may be directed to the Margaret Kernen Memorial Fund.

Margaret Cecilia Kernen was born Feb. 26, 1933, at her parents’ home in Creston.

After she graduated from Creston High School, she attended Ottumwa Heights College for two years, where she obtained her teaching certificate. Margaret taught elementary school in Villisca from 1953 to 1957.

On Sept. 7, 1957, Margaret married Henry (Junior) Kernen in Creston.

She was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church and P.E.O. Chapter CH, both in Villisca.

Margaret is survived by her husband Junior Kernen of Villisca; children, Marty Bangston of Essex, Joe (Lisa) Kernen of Villisca and Daniel (Maria) Kernen of Denver, Colo.; grandchildren, Corrie (Tom) McHale of Minneapolis, Minn., Kaley Bangston (Wyatt Setterburg) of Iowa City and Adel, Kyle Bangston of Ames, Quentin Bangston of Ames, Natasha Kernen (Travis Talada) of Villisca, Katelyn Kernen of Villisca and Joey Kernen of Villisca; great-grandchildren, Bennett McHale and Shyla Talada; siblings, Ethel (Jim) Herring of Marion, Helen Linderman of Creston, Mary McElroy of Creston, John (Kathleen) McElroy of Danneborg, Neb., Jean (Francis) Vais of Anita and Patricia Knock of New York, N.Y.; brothers-in-law, Dick Kuhl of Greenfield and Kenneth Kernen of Villisca; sister-in-law Maxine McElroy of Creston; many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Margaret was preceded in death by her parents; sister Katherine Kuhl; brother Kenneth McElroy; brothers-in-law, Howard Linderman and Stanley Johnson; sisters-in-law, Dorothe Johnson and Jean Kernen; and son-in-law Paul Bangston.
