Carol Hyda Fontanelle

Carol Hyda, 90, of Fontanelle died March 24, 2013, at the Good Samaritan Society in Fontanelle.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday, March 28, at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Fontanelle. The Rev. Steven Broers will officiate. Interment will be in Fontanelle Cemetery. Steen Funeral Home, Fontanelle, is in charge of arrangements. Memorials may be directed to Good Samaritan Society and Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Fontanelle. Online condolences may be left at

Carol Marie Queck Hyda, daughter of Pauline Elizabeth (Miller) and Christian Henry Paul Queck, was born Nov. 5, 1922, at their farm northeast of Bridgewater.

She was baptized on Nov. 26, 1922, and confirmed March 21, 1937, at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Fontanelle by the Rev. William Kurtz.

At the age of 4 1/2, Carol became ill with polio.

In 1927, she and her parents moved to a farm in Richland Township that they purchased.

Carol continued her education at Richland Consolidated School and graduated in 1940. She continued her education at Grand Island Business College in Nebraska. That next fall, she was offered the position of bookkeeper at Greenfield Creamery. She returned home to work for them.

On Dec. 3, 1942, Carol married Henry L. Hyda.

Carol farmed on the Hyda century farm in Summerset Township for more than 50 years.

Carol was active in the community including 4-H, Farm Bureau, teaching Sunday School, singing in the church’s choir and the American Legion Auxiliary.

In 1960, Carol began working at the U.S. Post Office and continued working until her husband’s health forced her to be home with him.

In 1985, Carol and Henry moved to their home in the town of Fontanelle, where they continued to be active in the community.

In July 2003, they entered the Good Samaritan Society.

Carol is survived by her daughter Kathy Tweeten of Hoffman Estates, Ill.; son Henry L. (Bonnie) Hyda Jr. of Waukee; granddaughters, Alison Tweeten, Jill Hyda and Tracey (Bryce) Kolund; sisters, Mary (Robert) McDowall and Lois Frederick; brother Robert (Barbara) Queck; sister-in-law Dorothy Queck; many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Carol was preceded in death by her husband; parents; baby brother Dean; brother Glen; sisters, Virginia Wallace and Ruth Dwyer; brothers-in-law, Richard Wallace, Dale Dwyer, William Frederick, Kenton Goodale and Lee Rohner; and sisters-in-law, Dorothea Goodale and Evelyn Rohner.
