Panthers fall on OT free kick

UNDERWOOD — The Creston boys soccer team nearly made a successful comeback before falling to Underwood, 3-2, in overtime Thursday to start the 2013 season.

Underwood, 11-6 a year ago, jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first half.

Sophomore Conner Pals scored both goals for Creston, including one on an assist by Brant Hudson five minutes before halftime. His second goal off a corner kick by Josh Sawtelle tied it.

Creston had two good chances to win it in regulation. A through-ball from Sawtelle to Pals for an apparent goal was nullified when Creston was called offsides. Later, Sawtelle took a hard shot that the Underwood goalkeeper got a hand on for the save.

“I’m proud of my guys,” Creston coach Jesus Rodriguez said. “We had the tempo of the game in the second half. It would have been 3-2 if they didn’t call the offsides when the defender came up to block the through-ball. We lost on a free kick over the keeper’s head when we committed a foul about 35 yards out.”

Goalkeeper Alex Nielsen had a busy night with 21 saves.

Creston lost the JV match, 2-1. Cory Rathe scored for Creston on a corner-kick assist from Tyler Helm. Jake Miller was in goal for the Panthers.

Creston travels to Missouri Valley Monday and Chariton Tuesday before returning home to take on West Central Valley on Thursday, with varsity scheduled at 6:30 p.m.
