Southwestern continues to play .500 softball in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference, ending the weekend at 3-3 in league play and 9-5 overall.

Nationally-ranked Kirkwood swept the Spartans Saturday in Cedar Rapids, 2-1 in 13 innings and 8-0. The Spartans rebounded at home Sunday with 5-2 and 8-1 victories ovver Iowa Lakes.

Kirkwood, now 4-0 in the conference and 16-3 overall, trailed Southwestern 1-0 in the top of the 10th in the opener. The Eagles tied it in the bottom of the 10th on an error, and won it on a walk-off homer by Leah Duffe in the 13th.

The game was a pitching duel between SWCC sophomore Leah Kipfer and Kirkwood freshman Amber Logemann of Earlham. Last year, Logemann lost an extra-inning game in the state finals to Martensdale-St. Marys, coached by SWCC assistant Todd Verwers.

This time, Kipfer won the statistical battle with 14 strikeouts, one earned run, only three hits allowed and four walks. Logemann fanned 15, yielded eight hits and walked five.

SWCC outfielder Ashley Brandt, currently hitting over .650, was 3-for-5 against Logemann. Kelsey Moore scored the only run on an RBI single by Carla Smith.

“Leah pitched a great game,” coach Lindsay Stumpff said. “We had plenty of chances. We outhit them, we just couldn’t get one at the right time.”

SWCC trailed 2-0 in the second game going into the fifth inning, but then the Eagles finished it off the next two frames to win 8-0. Courtney Wagner allowed seven hits with four strikeouts and three walks.

Tessa Otto and Brandt had SWCC’s only two hits against Kirkwood freshman Sam Belz.

Iowa Lakes, now 0-4 in the league and 5-9 overall, managed only three runs for the day against Kipfer and Wagner on Sunday. In the opener, Kipfer fanned 10 in a five-hitter with no walks and no earned runs allowed in the 5-2 win.

Dominique Tolle was 2-for-2 with a triple in the game. Taylor Powers tripled with two RBIs and Hannah Sneed drove in a run.

In the 8-1 victory, Wagner tossed a one-hitter with five strikeouts and four walks. Brandt continued her hot streak in a 4-for-5 game with a run, RBI and two stolen bases.

With Moore injuring a knee in pregame, Otto filled in with two hits, a run scored and two stolen bases. Sneed was 2-for-4 with a double and two runs, and Kipfer had two hits.

The Spartans are off until traveling to Boone Wednesday to take on DMACC (6-0, 14-0), which also swept Iowa Lakes this weekend, 8-0 and 13-3. Freshman shortstop Katlin Briley of Creston is batting .535 with five stolen bases.

“Right now everybody is a little sore and tired,” Stumpff said. “We’re taking a couple of days off, and hopefully be on top of our game Wednesday.”

Southwestern then plays at Central Community College in Columbus, Neb., on Thursday before returning home to face NIACC and Ellsworth next weekend.
