Harlan opened its girls soccer season with a 10-0 victory over Creston here Tuesday in a match ending on the state’s 10-goal mercy rule with 9:54 remaining.

Creston, which fell 4-1 at Missouri Valley Monday to open the 2013 season, never could get untracked after falling behind 2-0 in the first 10 minutes.

Junior Ann Petersen scored three goals in the first half as the Cyclones took a 6-0 lead at the break, and senior Cheryl Kleffman put three balls in the net in the second half. Petersen and Kleffman finished with four goals each, and junior Sidney Mills added two.

On the team’s official stats, Creston was credited with only one shot on goal, by forward Mackenzie Andreasen, while Harlan peppered the Panther defense with 12 shots saved by goalkeeper Sadie Jones in addition to the 10 goals.

Creston coach Kim Lauffer said Harlan’s speed in the midfield and forward areas proved difficult to contain with a largely inexperienced defense.

“Harlan is a strong team,” Lauffer said. “They had strong, attacking forwards and midfielders. A well-rounded team. We got knocked on our heels a little bit with those early goals. We didn’t want a 10-goal loss, but at this point, we’re still shifting positions and trying to find combinations.”

On Thursday the Panthers travel to Greenfield to take on Nodaway Valley/Adair-Casey/West Central Valley. The Valley girls defeated Missouri Valley Tuesday, 5-0.

Harlan won the JV match, 9-0. Kim Alley had 13 keeper saves.

The Creston boys soccer match scheduled Tuesday at Chariton was postponed to May 9 because of field and water issues.
