The Creston/Orient-Macksburg tennis teams opened the season Thursday by splitting with Atlantic, as the boys fell to the Trojans, 6-3, on the road and the girls scored a 6-3 win over the Trojanns at home.

The middle of the Creston/O-M girls lineup came up big for the Panthers earning decisive victories to propel the Panthers to the team win.

Emma Johnson picked up an 8-5 win at No. 2 singles, Amy Dunphy scored an 8-2 win at No. 3 singles and Ashley Harris won 8-3 at No. 4 singles.

“It was a great first meet out for the girls team,” said assistant coach Amanda Plymale. “We had solid wins in the middle of the lineup with Johnson, Amy Dunphy and Harris dictating play and closing in for the win.”

Freshman Jenna Taylor won an 8-5 match at No. 6 singles to give the Panthers a 4-2 team lead heading into doubles, where the Panthers picked up wins at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles from the teams of Audrey Fyock and Johnson and Amy Dunphy and Harris.

It was a different story for the Panther boys team on Thursday, as every close match seemed to go in Atlantic’s favor, head coach Kevin Cooper said.

The Panthers fell to Atlantic, 6-3.

Garret Taylor won a 10-6 match at No. 3 singles while Adam Bochart won a 10-5 match at No. 4 singles for the Panthers, who trailed 4-2 heading into doubles play.

Colby Taylor fell 10-7 at No. 1 singles and Bryce McIlravy lost 10-8 at No. 2 singles. At No. 6 singles, senior Ryan Cook lost 11-10 (7-3) in a tiebreaker.

“Tonight was not the way we wanted to start our season,” Cooper said. “Every match that was close tonight, Atlantic was able to close it out and we weren’t. It was a meet we could have won, but on a night where we struggled, we deserved to lose. Credit goes to Atlantic for outplaying and outhustling us tonight.”

The Panther boys and girls are back in action at home against Corning.
