Finally back to green grass

It is nice to see green grass again. I was beginning to wonder if it was going to happen this year. Here we are almost halfway into April and we are just now getting a chance to dust the snow off our lawn mowers and try them out.

Last year by this time we had already had to sharpen the blades! I'm not sure if we are out of the woods yet, but at least the white stuff — if we get any more — won't stick around for long.

I talked to one of my buddies in Cheyenne, Wyo., yesterday and they got 16 inches of snow on Tuesday and it was still snowing on Wednesday. They had 50 mph winds to go with it, and so the six to nine foot drifts made for a long day. Welcome to the spring of 2013.

Football

I see the Iowa Hawkeyes are having a scrimmage in Des Moines this weekend. They are expecting about 15,000 people to show up for the practice.

I went to the Nebraska spring game this past weekend and they had more than 60,000 people show up for the game. It was a nice day out and I had a chance to take my uncle who was visiting from Phoenix.

Social Security

So much for protecting the middle class! I see in the new Obama budget he is looking to take out the cost of living increases for folks on Social Security. I guess he needs that money to put into all these green energys that end up costing us all money and keep upping our electric bills because of the fact they cost so much more than natural gas or coal. Windmills may work in Holland, but so far they have been a major boondoggle here in the United States. I guess if you want to keep spending you just have to tax everybody a bunch more and you can keep the government flowing.

Braggin' rights

I had the honor (luck) of winning the company NCAA pool this past week. Good old Louisville came through for me and captured the first place money.

BurgersThe Iowa Beef Council was in Wednesday to present the Elms Club with its honor of being in the top 10 in the state of Iowa for its hamburger. We will find out next month if they are the top burger "joint" in the state.

Housing

I read in the AARP magazine that almost 17 percent of the USA households or 51 million Americans have two or more generations living in them. A case of the kids have moved back after college or grandma and grandpa are now part of the family. According to the article, the trend will continue and only get bigger as time goes on. Money and age are the two main factors for multigenerational families becoming the norm.

Marsha

I see that Marsha Wilson is retiring from Iowa Works this month. The retirement party is set for April 26 at the Iowa Works office. You can wish Marsha good luck that day between 2-4 p.m. Marsha also serves on the Creston City Council, so we will still have a chance to see Marsha in action around town! Have fun in your retirement.

Earth

Don't forget that Earth Day is April 22. Do everyone a favor and help pick up our environment of any trash you may see lying around. Mother Earth needs as much help as we can give her!
