Kustom Kakery owner Kylie Clayton had a vision.
After 10 years of honing her craft of creating signature cakes and spending the last two years working out of her home, Clayton and her team are adding “event center” to their name and have made the move to uptown Creston.
“I wanted to offer a full event package,” said Clayton. “A one-stop shop for any large celebration.”
On April 29, Clayton’s vision will be realized and Kustom Kakery Event Center, 124 N. Maple St., will open.
Smells like breakfast
Kustom Kakery Event Center will not only offer custom cakes made of silky butter cream and colored fondant, but will also serve breakfast from 7 a.m. to 2.p.m., Tuesday through Saturday.
“With the Iowana next door, we saw an opportunity to have a nearby establishment for the seniors to walk to,” said Clayton.
Breakfast offerings will be prepared by Head Cook Luke Smith.
“We’ll be making homemade biscuits and gravy, breakfast sandwiches, breakfast cupcakes and cinnamon rolls,” said Smith. “And, everything is made from scratch.”
Customers will have a choice of three kinds of homemade gravy to top their fresh-baked biscuits.
Events and services
As a venue rental, Kustom Kakery Event Center can accommodate up to 200 people. Clayton said it would be a great space for birthday and graduation parties, class reunions, office meetings, toy and gun shows and “Sweet 16” parties.
The event center will also offer DJ and lighting services by Luke Smith and photography by Sheri Foster of Kustom Kamera – a photography business under the umbrella of Kustom Kakery.
Foster said studio space, complete with lighting and props, is available to rent for local photographers who are in need of a studio.
Foster also helps Clayton design elaborate cakes for weddings, anniversaries, birthdays, baby showers or any other event. If you can think of it, Clayton, Foster and helper Mandy Harris said they can make it.
“We carve all of our cakes and create everything ourselves,” said Foster. “Nothing is molded.”
This approach to cake design allows the team complete flexibility and creative control of designing cakes that may not be offered by other bakeries.
Clayton prides herself and her team on creating unique, custom cakes. The taste, color and theme of each cake are customized to the meet the requests of every customer – most recently a cake designed to resemble a miniature vintage Volkswagen bug for a birthday party.
“We will also be offering baking classes,” said Clayton.
This summer, Clayton and her team will offer a “create a cupcake” station for children to customize cupcakes with their own frosting and toppings such as sprinkles, gummy bears, cookie crumbs and other confections.
The event space, the former site of now closed “Till 21 Club,” is undergoing a slight makeover while still preserving some of the decor and characteristics of Till 21.
Inside, Kustom Kakery Events Center has the feeling of being outside with a roadway painted on the cement floor and street light decor. A cab of a semi, which appears to be crashing through the brick wall, serves as a DJ and sound booth for Smith.
“We will also be hosting teen dances,” said Clayton.
Kustom Kakery Event Center will hold middle and high school dances from 6 to 8 p.m. and 9 to 12 p.m. respectively. The dances will be held on the first and third Saturday of the month.
“Till 21 Club was very popular when we were young,” said Clayton. “So we wanted to bring a little bit of that back and have a safe place for kids to hang out.”
Clayton said the doors will be monitored during the dances and Creston Middle School Teacher Mitch Sorensen will be assisting.
“He (Sorensen) has been a big part of the music with training and helping us purchase equipment and getting it going,” said Clayton.
At the teen dances, pizza from A&G Restaurant and Lounge and refreshments will be available for purchase.
Clayton and her staff at Kustom Kakery Events Center will open their doors 7 a.m. April 29 for breakfast, but are currently available to take cake orders. To place an order or for more information contact Clayton at (641) 202-9528.
