BOSTON — A Mount Ayr graduate was only three blocks away from where two crude bombs exploded at the Boston Marathon Monday — killing three and injuring at least 140 people.

Dr. Sharon (Pool) Smally, 1971 graduate of Mount Ayr High School, was at the Boston Marathon watching her daughter Allyson Smally compete. Allyson finished about 15 to 20 minutes prior to the bombs exploding Monday afternoon.

“She called me after the race,” Sharon said. “She was cold and tired, so I started walking down Boylston Street — where the explosions occurred — toward the family meeting area. But, the street was packed so I made the decision to get off Boylston, go through a department store and get on another street.

“I got to the family meeting area, found my daughter, and that’s when we think the explosions happened. Surprisingly, we never heard them, but we knew something bad had happened because we were seeing a lot of police cars and ambulances.”

Sharon and her daughter quickly left the area and walked two blocks to where Sharon’s husband had parked the car. They immediately headed west toward Connecticut — where the family currently resides.

They were on the Massachusetts Turnpike when they saw “a continuous stream of police cars.” They turned on the radio to find out they were only three blocks away from the explosions.

Sharon, 60, a pediatrician in Glastonbury, Conn., spoke to the Creston News Advertiser this morning before her patients arrived at 8 a.m.

“I’m just so happy to be working today,” Sharon said.

Sharon was born in Mount Ayr in 1952 and lived her entire childhood there. She graduated from Mount Ayr High School in 1971.

Her father Max Pool was a longtime large animal veterinarian in Mount Ayr. Max and his wife later moved and lived on a farm south of Creston.
