Cancelled

Because of continued inclement weather, the Panther Relays rescheduled for today is cancelled. Officials from participating schools have been unable to find additional suitable makeup dates.

Graceland award

LAMONI — Phyllis O’Daniels of Creston, Graceland University’s faculty athletics representative (FAR), is being recognized with the NAIA’s highest honor for an individual serving in this capacity.

O’Daniels has been named the 2012-13 recipient of the Wally Schwartz Award for her dedicated service to student-athletes of Graceland University and the Heart of America Athletic Conference.

“It’s such an honor to receive an award like this knowing it’s from my peers,” O’Daniels said. “It’s because of all the wonderful people and student-athletes that I’ve worked with that I would even be considered for an award like this. For that, I’m truly grateful to everyone.”

The award honors past NAIA Vice President of Legislature Services Wally Schwartz and annually recognizes conference, regional and national Faculty Athletic Representatives.

O’Daniels has served the HAAC conference for 22 years. She has been Graceland FAR since the 1988-89 school year.

Officials ceremony

A total of 178 officials are scheduled to receive awards at the Iowa High School Athletic Association’s 19th annual Officials Banquet and Recognition Ceremony on Saturday, April 27, at Hy-Vee Hall in Des Moines.

A social hour will start the festivities at 5:30 p.m., followed by the dinner and recognition program.

The list of honorees includes 35-year awards for Jim Christensen of Fontanelle, C. Leroy Dukes of Bedford and John Walters of Creston. Dave Huff of Greenfield will receive a 15-year award.

Among 15 officials receiving plaques as NFOA state award winners for official of the year in a particular sport are Tom Moore of Griswold for wrestling, and Bob Sweeney of Atlantic for baseball.

Prayer breakfast

Southern Prairie YMCA’s Christian Emphasis Committee will host a prayer breakfast in the YMCA gym at 7 a.m. May 2, the National Day of Prayer.

Joe Powers will lead the gathering in prayer for the community.

Healthy Kids Day

Southern Prairie YMCA plans to get a jump start on summer with Healthy Kids Day from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, May 4.

The event includes hands-on fun and educational experiences for children and families. Activities include make-and-take projects, and educational experiences on eating and playing healthy. Scuba participation in the pool is open to those over 10 years old. There are no fees.

YMCA 5K

The 5K Spring Fun Run/Walk sponsored by Southern Prairie YMCA will be held at 8 a.m. Saturday, May 11.

The race starts at the YMCA and heads north on the walking trail, turning west onto 150th Street, then back to the walking trail and around the Southwestern Community College campus before ending at the YMCA.

Early bird registration for $15 ends April 26. Registration after that is $20. For more information or to register, contact Southern Prairie YMCA at 782-9622.

Older adults

May is a month of special activities for active older adults at Southern Prairie YMCA.

Each Wednesday in May will be designated a special day for seniors, including free classes and day passes. Four different senior programs are scheduled at 11 a.m. on those Wednesdays.

“Help us celebrate National Senior Health and Fitness Day on May 29,” said Raquel Linch, Southern Prairie YMCA Welcome Center supervisor. “This will a free day for seniors. The morning will feature free senior-friendly fitness assessments, refreshments, health tips, free Trolley service and other information and classes.”

Group swimming

Group swimming lessons are scheduled in June and July at Southern Prairie YMCA, available in mornings and evenings.

The lessons in June are set for ages 4 and up. Class size is limited. For more information or to register for a class, contact Southern Prairie YMCA at 782-6628.

Slowpitch softball

The Creston men’s slowpitch softball league will begin either on May 17 or May 24.
