Breta Kinkade Creston

Breta M. Kinkade, 94, of Creston died April 20, 2013, at Afton Care Center.

Services will be 10:30 a.m Thursday, April 25, at Salem Lutheran Church. The Rev. Ben McIntire will officiate. Burial will be in Graceland Cemetery. Open visitation will be 2 to 8 p.m. Wednesday with family present 6 to 8 p.m. at Powers Funeral Home, junction of highways 34 and 25. Memorials may be directed to Salem Lutheran Church. Breta Miriam Elizabeth (Faust) Kinkade, daughter of Anny Marie (Moberg) and John August Faust, was born June 14, 1918, in Upsula, Sweden.

Breta moved from Sweden when she was 6 years old and came through Ellis Island to Creston.

Breta graduated from Creston High School in 1936.

On May 8, 1938, Breta married Harry William Kinkade in Creston.

Before marrying, Breta worked at the Five and Dime Store in Creston. She then was a homemaker. Later, she worked for the Iowa State University Extension office, teaching nutrition to new young families.

Breta received Creston’s Chamber of Commerce Volunteer of the Year Award in 2009 for serving 35 years as a volunteer in the community. She helped with all aspects of the Creston meal site.

She served on the Elected Older Iowa Legislature, representing Union and Adair counties from 1989 to 1993. In 1995, Congressman Jim Lightfoot asked Breta to represent southwest Iowa at the White House Council on Aging in Washington, D.C.

She also served three years on Southwest Iowa Transportation Board and Meals on Wheels Board of Directors from 1973 until its dissolution. She also served on the Area XIV Agency on Aging Board of Directors, and Area XIV designated a volunteer award and named it in her honor: The Breta Kinkade Distinguished Volunteer Service Award, a seven-county area award, received in 2009.

Breta was a member of Salem Lutheran Church.

Breta is survived by her sons, Michael (wife Vivian) Kinkade of Ankeny, Mark (wife Judy) Kinkade of Creston, James (wife Pam) Kinkade of Tulsa, Okla., and Tim Kinkade (friend Kim) of Pella; daughters, Susanne (husband David) McCay of Broken Arrow, Okla., and Cynthia (husband Steve) Blakely of Keller, Texas; 15 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; brother George (wife Allie) Faust of Creston; sister Ellen Thayer of Council Bluffs; many nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Breta was preceded in death by her parents; husband in 2003; grandson Jeff Kinkade; and brother Stewart Faust.
