Joan E. Rains, 57, of Massena, formerly of Creston, died April 19, 2013, at Greater Regional Hospice Home in Creston.

Celebration of life services will be 12:30 p.m. Thursday, April 25, at Pearson Family Funeral Service, 809 W. Montgomery St., Creston. Biker Mark Carver of Des Moines will officiate. Inurnment will be in Carl Cemetery in Adams County at a later date. There will be no public viewing. Visitation with family present will be 11 a.m. until noon Thursday prior to the service. Memorials may be directed to the family in Joan’s name. Online condolences may be left at www.pearsonfuneralhomes.com.

Joan Ellen Rains, daughter of Marilyn Joyce (Hight) and William Lowell Steele, was born April 23, 1955, in Corning.

Joan lived in Massena the past 16 years. She also lived in Creston and Bakersfield, Calif. She attended school in Bakersfield, Calif.

On Jan. 7, 1972, Joan married Steve Rains in Bakersfield, Calif. They later divorced.

Joan worked for several different factories during her life. When the family moved back to Iowa, she worked for a sewing factory in Bedford. Joan also worked for Papetti’s in Lenox, gummy bear in Creston and Heat Tech in Afton.

Joan is survived by her son Larry Rains of Creston; daughters, Carrie (Curtis) Downey of Creston and Carla Britton of Grimes; grandchildren: Michael Phelps, Tyler Downey, Nathan and Nolan Rains, Dylan Downey, Danna Rains, Kimmy Britton, Aly Downey, Keyawna Conley and Natalee Millslagle; brother Steve Steele of Massena; sisters, Joyce (Milton) Lawry of Osceola, Jill Moralez of Corning, Jean (Greg) Passley of Cassville, Mo., and Jennifer (Brian) Krauth of Corning; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Joan was preceded in death by her parents; grandparents; and son Jeremy Wayne Rains.
