Lewis Central’s Class 2A seventh-ranked girls soccer team wasted little time in taking control of Tuesday’s match against Creston, scoring 10 goals in the opening 30 minutes on the way to a 10-0 mercy rule ending after one half.
LC improved to 5-2 overall and 4-0 in Hawkeye 10 play. The talented Titans have posted 10-0 wins over Denison-Schleswig, Atlantic and the Panthers, and blanked Carroll Kuemper 7-0.
Creston coach Kim Lauffer knew it would be a supreme challenge, but was left less than satisfied with the challenge posed by her squad.
“I knew they were tough,” she said. “But what I’m not pleased with, is the way we played. We didn’t do our best. We gave up 46 chances to possess the ball on 50-50 balls, and only brought down nine of them and possessed them. So, I’m more disappointed in how we lost.”
Lauffer said quicker reactions are required against quality players.
“A lot of teams are waiting to take it away as soon as the ball hits the ground,” the Panther coach said. “We’re playing too slow for the game speed. We get to the ball, but then we have to act faster.”
The Panther defense, a strength in recent matches, was unable to withstand the Titans’ relentless attack.
LC scored its first three goals in the first five minutes, and already had 10 with 10:18 remaining in the half. The Iowa girls mercy rule ends at 10 goals, but requires the first half to be played out.
“We were working hard, but overwhelmed by how much offense was pushing in on us,” Lauffer said. “They won the toss, got the wind for the first half, and it was tough to get going.”
Creston had no shots on goal operating against the athletic Titans and north wind gusting above 20 mph. Goalkeeper Sadie Jones had 16 saves.
Creston, 0-5 overall and 0-2 in the conference, will not participate in the originally scheduled ADM tournament in Adel. Next action will be at home Monday against Chariton, with a chance to avenge an earlier 1-0 defeat. There will be varsity and JV action.
