PELLA — With improved weather, came improved performances as the Southwestern track and field team set 19 personal bests here Saturday at the Central College Open.

“I think it went pretty well,” head coach Bill Huntington said. “We set 19 PRs throughout the team. Obviously, we’re a new program, but I think they reset 18 school records. It was a pretty good day. We competed pretty well, too. Times are times, but you need to be putting people in the top four or five. That’s important.”

Leading the way for the Spartans was a pair of impressive performances in the 400 meter dash.

Rayvonne Brown, competing in the next-to-last, heat blazed a time of 49.86 to set the time to beat for the final heat.

Marquis Flowers battled all the way around the track with Central senior Tyler Westphal, edging him at the line in a time of 50.01 to earn second place to Brown. Westphal crossed in 50.09.

“They did a great job in that,” Huntington said. “Ray won his heat pretty handily. Marquis won his heat and just edged his guy.”

With the top two open 400 meter runners, the Spartans also put together a solid 4x400 relay team, finishing fifth in the relay.

The team of Brown, Terrence Gaye, Joe Bierl and Flowers clocked a time of 3:25.54, which was three and a half seconds faster than their previous time.

Freshman Jackson Shantz of Greenfield also had a good day for the Spartans, finishing 14th in the 110 meter high hurdles and fifth in the 400 meter hurdles with a time of 56.98.

“He didn’t equal his best in the 110 highs, but boy did he have a really good 400 hurdles,” Huntington said. “His last three times out, he’s gone 1:06, 58 and then he went 56 on Saturday. A 56 is a nice time.”

Dave Prchal and Gage Beers finished sixth and seventh, respectively, in the 3,000 meter steeplechase, as both continued to drop their times in the event.

Zack Ruth of Osceola set new PRs in both the shot put and the discus for the Spartans.

On the women’s side, the 4x100 relay team of Payton Wilkenfeld, Molly Schimp, Kristin Klocksiem and Kaley Folkerts took one and half seconds off their previous time.

Wilkenfeld also reset school records in the 100 meter dash and the 200 meter dash.

Regina Hafner and Kalli McCann each ran well in the 1,500 meter run, while McCann also finished sixth in the 3,000 meters.

Schimp did not compete in the high jump while dealing with a knee injury. Huntington said he did not know when she would be able to high jump again.

Southwestern returns to action Friday at Simpson with action beginning at 2 p.m. in both the field events and running events.
