CARLISLE — Creston senior Brianna Maitlen had a breakout performance in helping to lead the Panthers to a second-place finish behind Norwalk at the Carlisle Girls Invitational here on Thursday.
Maitlen picked up wins in the long jump, with her season’s best jump, and the 100 meter hurdles.
She also ran solid legs on the sprint medley relay and the 4x100 relay.
“This was definitely a senior breakout party for Brianna Maitlen,” head coach Clay Arnold said. “She started off in that long jump, jumping a season best. First time over 16, really gave her a lot of confidence. Comes back and wins the 100 hurdles easily and in her first 400 of the year (sprint medley), came out and ran a very strong race. Then ran a superb, superb anchor of the 4x1. She found a gear we had not seen from her in a long time.”
Maitlen split a 1:05.06 in the sprint medley relay anchor and the clocked a 12.57 anchor in the 4x100.
Also giving the Panthers standout performances were the Mostek twins — Maria and Natalie.
Maria Mostek got things started off with a win in the 3,000 meter run, running her race plan to perfection.
“Maria ran a phenomenal race,” Arnold said. “Ran it exactly how I told her to. She listened to me and put pressure on the Winterset and ADM girls when I told her to. She wore them down and cruised to a first place finish.”
Mostek then doubled back and took second place in the 1,500 meters after leading much of the race before being overtaken on the final lap by a Winterset runner. Emily Wignall finished third in the 3,000 meters and fifth in the 1,500.
Natalie Mostek finished third in the high jump and then made it a perfect four-for-four in anchoring the 4x800 relay, as all four members ran season best splits in the race.
Joining Natalie on the relay were Jessica Beatty, Maddie Skarda and Taylor Briley. The team finished third in 10:31.60.
Natalie Mostek wasn’t done there, though, as she finished third in the open 800 meters with a career best time of 2:29.49 and ran on the fifth place 4x400 relay team.
“Both Mostek girls were lights out,” Arnold said. “Tonight’s meet from Natalie Mostek was the single biggest, most impressive meet she’s had of her career.”
Arnold said Beatty also stood out to him Thursday night. Beatty finished the night by splitting under 1:10 on the anchor of the 4x400 relay.
With Beatty and Maitlen each running below the 1:10 mark for 400 meter splits Thursday night, Arnold said his team is now up to 15 girls who have broken 1:10 for the 400 this year.
Creston returns to action Monday in Atlantic.
