Panther tennis splits with Shenandoah

Creston's Amy Dunphy returns the ball against Hannah Dailey of Shenandoah during No. 3 singles action Thursday at the SWCC courts. Dailey won, 8-6, as the Fillies prevailed in the Hawkeye 10 dual, 7-2.

Both meets ended in 7-2 scores, as the Creston/O-M boys tennis team won at Shenandoah Thursday, while the Panther girls lost at home to the Fillies.

The Creston/O-M boys improved to 3-1, while dropping the Mustangs to 2-2 for the season. The Panthers took control by winning four of six singles matches, followed by a 2-1 mark in doubles.

“Tonight was a great night for our varsity team,” said Creston/O-M coach Kevin Cooper. “It was nice to get back on the court with some nice weather. I felt like we played better tonight. The meet was closer than it might appear when you see the 7-2 final score. There were five close matches and we won the majority of them, which was the difference in the match.”

The Creston/O-M boys compete at Osceola Clarke today and in the Red Oak Tournament Saturday.

Emma Johnson won 8-5 at No. 2 singles for the Creston/O-M girls Thursday. The other win was by the freshman duo of Caitlin McIlravy and Jenna Taylor at No. 2 doubles, also by an 8-6 score.

“I thought we were more aggressive tonight and that was a good thing to see,” said Creston/O-M assistant coach Amanda Plymale. “Emma rallied all night and came up with a strong win for us at No. 2. Caitlin and Jenna were down in their match, and came back to win after stepping up their serving and doubles communication.”

The Panther girls host Osceola Clarke today.
