Budach narrowly misses Nationals

Southwestern Community College golfer Molly Budach finished two strokes from national qualifying during regional play last weekend in Ankeny.

Budach shot 89-93 for a 36-hole score of 182 at Otter Creek Golf Course. The final two of 15 qualifiers for the National NJCAA Tournament were Moriah Sherman of North Iowa Area CC and Jalyn Briley of Des Moines Area CC at 180.

Overall, SWCC finished fifth with a score of 865.

Medalist was Iowa Western’s Joana Yanez, shooting 11-over par 153 on rounds of 77 and 76. As a team, Iowa Western claimed the regional title by shooting 60-over par 628 at 323-305.

The men’s tournament is Friday and Saturday at Fort Dodge Golf & Country Club.

The Southwestern men and women participated in the Graceland Invitational at Mozingo Golf Club in Maryville on March 29-30.

Colin McCracken led the men in 66th place in the 80-man field, while Konnor Griffith paced the women in 20th place among 30 players.

The SWCC men and women opened their 2013 junior college season April 4 at the DMACC Classic in Boone.

David Thompson led the Spartans with an 84, in 28th place among 48 golfers. Ben Burkhead, Stevie Smith and Jared Theis all showed improvement from the early “open” events.

For the women, Griffith led the Spartans with a 99. Lily Lower and Logan Kinyon also showed improvement.

Burkhead (94) and McCracken (85) led the Spartans in the NIACC Invitational April 22.
