Red Oak swept the Creston/O-M teams in tennis Monday, sweeping the girls meet 9-0 in Red Oak, while the Tigers prevailed 6-3 in boys action here to avenge a team substate loss last year to the Panthers.

Last May, Creston/O-M reached the substate finals at Harlan against Boone after edging the Tigers, 5-4.

This year, Red Oak took control by winning four of the six singles matches. Red Oak claimed two of the three doubles matches, including a tiebreaker set at No. 2 doubles.

Panther winners were Adam Bochart and Ryan Cook in singles, and the No. 1 doubles team of Colby Taylor and Bryce McIlravy.

“Coming in we knew that this dual was going to be close,” Creston/O-M coach Kevin Cooper said. “We had our chances to win the meet and we just weren’t able to convert. We lost a few close matches. We have to learn how to put those away.”

On the positive side, the weather was near-perfect in an otherwise blustery spring season, as a good setting for 2013 senior recognition night. Introduced with their parents were seniors Austin Hurt, Logan Angelo, Jacob Caviness, Cook, Bochart, McIlravy and Taylor.

“It was a great night weather-wise, and it’s great to play good competition this late in the season,” Cooper said. “Hopefully we can get some good practice in this week and prepare for the end of our postseason tournaments.”

The boys host Chariton in varsity play today, while the Creston girls travel to Chariton.

At Red Oak Monday, a Tiger squad deep in experienced talent cruised to the 9-0 win. Still, there were competitive matches.

“Our number one and two singles players, Audrey Fyock and Emma Johnson, battled it out with long rallies,” coach Amanda Plymale said. “Fyock had great serves and placement of shots. Our meet score doesn’t show how many of the games were extremely close, taking it to deuce almost every time. Our JV came away with a few wins and they are getting good experience for next year.”
