INDIANOLA — The Southwestern Community College track and field team got a chance to see how it stacked up against some big-time competition here Friday at the Kip Janvrin Open on Simpson College’s campus.

Among the teams competing in the meet were Iowa State, Illinois, Saint Louis University and Northwest Missouri State.

“That was probably the nicest day we’ve had so far. I wish we could get a couple more of them,” head coach Bill Huntington said. “Competition wise, that might have been as stiff of competition as we’ve seen all year. Tons of D-I schools. In general, I think we ran pretty well.”

Josh Cobb got the Spartans out to a good start, running third in the 10,000 meters on a warm, windy day.

“It wasn’t his best time, but maybe his best race of the season so far,” Huntington said. “It was a little windy then, but I think he ended up going third overall. I was very happy for him.”

Overall, Huntington said he was really pleased with how his distance runners ran.

Freshman Gage Beers of Osceola ran a personal best time in the 1,500 meters. Beers bettered his time by nearly six seconds.

“That was a crazy, jacked field,” Huntington said. “That was a rolling, rolling race. I thought Gage did well.”

Joe Bierl stepped up and ran a solid race in the 800 meter run, clocking a 1:58.96.

On the women’s side, Huntington said Kalli McCann ran a solid 5,000 meter run after having run the 1,500 meters earlier in the day.

“Kalli’s just now getting back,” he said, talking about her previous injury. “By the time she ran Friday night, she ran a very good time in a loaded field there in the 5,000. It was her second best time of the year, but she hasn’t even gotten to run on the ground, she’s been training in the pool.”

Official results of the 5,000 meter run were unavailable.

Both Payton Wilkenfeld and Terrence Gaye ran well in their sprint events, Huntington said.

Wilkenfeld ran personal bests in both the 100 meter dash and the 200 meter dash, while Gaye also ran a personal best in the 100, placing eighth overall.

Freshman Jackson Shantz of Greenfield finished seventh overall in the 400 meter hurdles.

Southwestern returns to action Saturday and Sunday at the Region XI Championships on Iowa Western’s campus, where the top three in each event earn all-region honors and the winner of each event automatically qualifies for the national meet.
