Region XI DII softball delayed by snow

FORT DODGE — The Iowa Community College Athletic Conference is gearing up an NJCAA Region XI Division II Softball Tournament delayed by three days because of inclement weather.

The seeding for the tournament is set, with Kirkwood at No. 1, DMACC at No. 2, Southwestern at No. 3, Marshalltown at No. 4, NIACC at No. 5, Ellsworth at No. 6, Iowa Lakes at No. 7 and Iowa Central at No. 8.

Action begins Sunday afternoon in the double-elimination tournament, after the original Thursday start was postponed by a 6-inch snowfall in Fort Dodge. Competition is held at the Harlan Rogers Complex, site of the Iowa high school state tourney.

Riding a 41-win streak, Kirkwood will look to continue its dominance in the ICCAC, as the Eagles are perfect this season in conference games with a 28-0 record. Kirkwood is No. 3 on the NJCAA national poll.

DMACC also had an impressive regular season. The Bears were 22-6 in conference games and 35-7 overall this season. DMACC,which includes shortstop Katlin Briley and pinch-hitter Shelby Kramer of Creston, is No. 6 on the national poll.

Third-seed Southwestern features outfielder Ashley Brandt, leading ICCAC D-II softball in batting average with a .539 average.

The winner on Tuesday of the tournament will go on to compete against the Region IX winner for the district championship.

First round pairings Sunday:

Field 1 — (1) Kirkwood vs. (8) Iowa Central, 1 p.m.; (3) Southwestern vs. (6) Ellsworth, 3 p.m.; Kirkwood-ICCC loser vs. Marshaltown-NIACC loser, 5 p.m.; Kirkwood-ICCC winner vs. Marshalltown-NIACC winner, 7 p.m.

Field 2 — (4) Marshalltown vs. (5) NIACC, 1 p.m.; (7) Iowa Lakes vs. (2) DMACC, 3 p.m.; SWCC-Ellsworth loser vs. ILCC-DMACC loser, 5 p.m.; SWCC-Ellsworth winner vs. ILCC-DMACC winner, 7 p.m.

Games continue at 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. Monday, and 1 and 3 p.m,. Tuesday with the final elimination game at 5 p.m. Tuesday.
