Boot camp for parents

Last summer I survived the Southern Prairie YMCA’s boot camp taught by Dave and Cena Danielson. It was during the middle of the blistering drought, and I remember doing sit ups and abdominal work, and it being so dry the grass pricked your skin like a cactus.

Before Saturday, that was the last boot camp I attended.

Saturday a few of us soon-to-be parents joined together at Greater Regional Medical Center for baby boot camp. There was far more talk than action at this boot camp.

Most of the morning we talked about breasts, breast milk and breastfeeding. There wasn’t much left to the imagination when teaching seized on this subject by late morning. That’s all I will say. I will spare you the details on when to use nipple cream and how to avoid nipple confusion.

Through all that visual information, did I learn something from these teachings, though? Yes.

We need a deep freeze.

Why? Because we were told the baby’s food (breast milk) can be stored in a deep freeze for up to one year. That’s money in the bank, plus the deep freeze can double as space for multiple pounds of packaged pork or beef.

Most of the afternoon portion of this six-hour boot camp was dedicated to the final weeks of childbirth all the way through the first six months of parenthood. We received a ton of good information like ways to help prevent SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome), hands-on demonstration of baby CPR and a tour of GRMC’s new birthing center.

The boot camp session was yet another reminder of how much our lives are about to change. We have less than 50 days until Stormy Lee’s due date. I’m to the point where I just can’t wait to meet our daughter. For now, though, I’m going to get started searching for a medium-priced deep freeze, as well as, making space in our kitchen for a dishwasher.

Oh yeah, and I need to put together the car seat and stroller.

I’m starting to get used to this never-ending to-do list.
