Revised schedule

FORT DODGE – Wet grounds forced the Region XI Division II softball tournament to begin today, rather than Sunday, at the Harlan Rogers Complex here.

Now, today’s first round will be single elimination. The remaining games will be played in a double-elimination format in a two-day tournament concluding at 4 p.m. Tuesday, 6 p.m. if necessary.

Southwestern, the third-seed, meets sixth-seeded Ellsworth at 4 p.m. on Field 1. The winner plays either second-seed DMACC or seventh-seed Iowa Lakes at 6 p.m. today on Field 2.

Win or lose that game, and SWCC would resume play at noon on Tuesday. A second loss would eliminate the Spartans.

Likewise, the men’s golf regional at Fort Dodge Golf & Country Club was postponed until today.

SWCC fundraiser

The 14th annual Southwestern Community College four-person best shot golf tournament will be held May 18 at Crestmoor Golf Club. Tee-off times are 8 a.m. and 2 p.m.

Entry fee is $270 per team. This includes 18 holes of golf, flag prizes at every hole, golf cart use, hole-in-one prize on No. 2 (2013 Chevrolet Malibu), grilled brats and refreshments and a Southwestern golf polo shirt for each team member.

The annual fundraiser event is sponsored by Southwest Distributing Company, Walmart Supercenter and Stalker Chevrolet.

Teams can sign up at Crestmoore Golf Club or contact Bill Krejci at 641-782-1459 or 641-202-1941.

Tourney cancelled

Inclement weather led to cancellation of the Panther Invitational boys and girls soccer tournament Saturday.

While the tournament in its original format will not be made up, school officials are hopeful of scheduling some makeup competition for the Creston teams.

Summit League

FARGO, N.D. — South Dakota softball’s Yvon Minogue and Morgan Hancock each hit one home run and accounted for all five of the Coyotes’ RBIs in a 7-5 loss to North Dakota State at Ellig Sports Complex on Saturday afternoon.

The game was the regular season finale for the Coyotes (29-18, 12-7 SL), who will begin preparing for their first Summit League Championships appearance on Thursday against Fort Wayne.

Madison Frain of Creston (7-9) pitched the first 4 1/3 innings for the Coyotes, surrendering all seven runs on nine hits while striking out five. Missy Blackburn threw the final 1 2/3 of relief, allowing one hit while walking none.

USD will be the three seed in the Summit League Championships, which will begin on Thursday. Game times will be announced on today.
