SHENANDOAH — Strong performances by senior Brianna Maitlen and the Mostek twins fueled the Creston girls track team to a third-place finish here Monday at the Hawkeye 10 Conference Meet.

The Panthers finished third with 78 points, trailing Harlan’s 175 and Glenwood’s 138 points.

Creston got out to a good start thanks to Maitlen becoming a three-time Hawkeye 10 Conference champion in the long jump.

Maitlen jumped 16-3 to win the long jump competition by five inches.

“It’s pretty awesome, Maitlen being a three-time champion in the long jump,” head coach Clay Arnold said. “Pretty incredible. That was great to see.”

Senior Emily Wignall kept things rolling with a third-place finish in the 3,000 meter run, clocking a time of 12:10.43.

The 4x800 relay team of Maria Mostek, Nicole Haley, Taylor Briley and Jessica Beatty followed up that performance with a second-place finish in 10:20.74, highlighted by Mostek’s opening leg split of 2:24.89.

“I was elated with that 4x8,” Arnold said. “Obviously, Maria ran just lights out on that opening leg. We put her there and we knew she was going to run around a 2:30 somewhere, but she definitely blew everybody’s socks off with a 2:24.890. I was very happy with that second place. Ran our best overall time of the year by seven or eight seconds.”

Not to be outdone by her twin sister, Natalie Mostek anchored the 1,600 medley relay to a third place finish in 4:26.07. Members of that team were Chelcee Downing, Jami Sickels and Taylor Hudson.

Natalie Mostek anchored in a 2:24.73.

“I was ecstatic with our time,” Arnold said. “Everybody there that knew the Mostek girls, knew that Natalie was going to answer Maria. Everyone and their dog knew Natalie was going to come back and match it, and she did. I was very happy with Taylor Hudson. She’s having a lot of problems with sickness, but she ran a very good leg to put Natalie in a good spot. Chelcee and Jami ran under their goal times.”

But Maitlen and the Mostek twins didn’t stop there.

Maitlen came back to finish second in the 100 hurdles, just .19 of a second off the winning time. The senior standout also ran a solid 200-meter leg on the sprint medley relay that included Downing, Zaidy Frank and Briley.

Briley ran an impressive anchor leg in that race, nearly holding off Harlan for the win, as the Panthers ended up finishing second.

Maria Mostek won the 1,500 meter run with a season’s best time of 5:08.89, while Wignall finished fourth in 5:17.62.

Natalie Mostek finished second in the 800 meter run, running a 2:28.71 after getting boxed in on the first lap.

Arnold said he was also impressed by the shuttle hurdle relay team of Brittney Minson, Madison Hance, Amber Castillo and Brooke Thelen, which once again ran its fastest time of the season.

“I’m really excited with how they’re coming together here,” he said. “Minson and Hance are three-stepping. Hance, her split was faster than anything she’d run before. Brooke Thelen, our anchor, she took a bunch of time off.”

Hance, who spent the first part of her day competing at Hawkeye 10 golf in Harlan, finished fifth in the 400 hurdles, coming out of the slow heat, despite hitting a hurdle coming out of the final turn and dropping to all fours on the track.

“She came down on the track on all fours, got back up, won her heat, ran a pretty good time and still got fifth,” Arnold said. “She was on pace to PR again. That was pretty inspiring.”

Olivia Nielsen also threw a PR in the discus for the Panthers.

Creston returns to action with the State Qualifying Meet on Thursday in Glenwood, with action starting at 4 p.m.
