GREENFIELD — Creston Black won the second annual Nodaway Valley Invitational Golf Tournament here on Tuesday, posting a team score of 270 ahead of second-place Winterset with 297.
Nodaway Valley Purple finished third with a score of 305, followed by Creston Red’s 309 and Nodaway Valley Silver’s 333.
The event breaks each team into three different categories — stroke play, best shot and better ball.
In best shot, each player on a two-person team hits a ball and then they decide which shot of the two to take the next shot from, while in better ball, both players play their own ball and take the lower score of the two on the hole.
The Creston Black pairing of Carson Whittington and Trey Thomsen won medalist honors in the best shot category, shooting a round of 12-under par 58.
Creston Black also earned medalist honors in the better ball portion of the competition as the team of Sam Hartsock and Kainen Somers recorded a round of 2-under par 68.
Hunter Sickels of Creston Black won the stroke play competition with a 2-under par round of 68, while Creston Red’s Christian Groumoutis came in runner-up with a round of 1-under par 69.
Jake Speer was the lone Nodaway Valley player to earn a medal, posting a round of 3-over par 73 in the stroke play competition to come in third.
“It was a great way to end the season before postseason starts,” Nodaway Valley head coach Steve Shantz said. “We were up against two very good Class 3A teams. Creston just came off of a conference championship and Winterset was runner-up in its conference. It wasn’t a case that we shot bad, but the other teams shot extremely well. If we continue to shoot well, we have a good shot to move on in our sectional on Friday.”
