HUXLEY — Creston/O-M defeated Saydel in the first round of Class 1A team tennis regional play Saturday here.

After the Panthers prevailed 5-2 in the opening round, Ballard eliminated Creston/O-M with a 5-0 victory. Ballard had advanced to the second round by defeating Clarke of Osceola.

Ballard advances to the May 18 team regional finals.

“It was great to win round one against Saydel,” said Creston/O-M assistant coach Amanda Plymale. “Ballard is a really good team that beat Clarke. Clarke had beat us in our dual this year, so we knew we were going up against a really solid team.”

With winds gusting to more than 30 mph, the Panthers were able to adjust and pick up singles victories by Audrey Fyock, Emma Johnson, Ashley Harris and Alli Thomsen.

At that point, the Panthers needed only one doubles victory to clinch the dual win, and got that from Cailtin McIlravy and Jenna Taylor at No. 3 doubles, 6-2, 6-0.

Today, the Panther girls are in Carroll for the Hawkeye 10 girls tennis tournament. Girls individual singles and doubles play will be Thursday in Norwalk.
