Creston/O-M junior Carson Whittington watches an iron shot land at Atlantic Golf & Country Club Friday in Class 3A sectional play. Whittington shot 70 as runner-up medalist, advancing individually as well as leading the Panthers to a district berth Friday at Carroll with a second-place score of 300. Atlantic (295) and Winterset (314) were the other qualifying teams.

ATLANTIC — This time the tables were turned Friday, and Atlantic boys got the best of Creston/O-M Friday on the Trojans’ home course at Atlantic Golf and Country Club.

Just four days earlier, the Panthers had claimed the Hawkeye 10 title over the Trojans by eight strokes (311 to 319) at Crestmoor Golf Club.

On Friday, the host Trojans won the 18-hole event with 295 strokes with Creston/O-M second at 300 and Winterset third at 314. All three teams advance to district play on May 17. Harlan was a close fourth at 317.

Normally, two teams advance to district play. But if one of the top two is the host team, a third is allowed to advance.

Evan Schuler paced the Trojans with an 18-hole round of 69. Junior Carson Whittington of Creston/O-M, seeking his third state meet appearance, advanced individually to district, as well, with his runner-up score of 70.

Other individual qualifiers were Atlantic’s Sam Markham with a 73, and Harlan’s Ross Martens with a 74.

Second-best scores for Creston/O-M were turned in by Trey Thomsen and Sam Hartsock, both at 75.

“Atlantic and Creston are still battling,” Creston/O-M coach Jan Lesan said. “They beat us by five strokes. Atlantic did an awesome job and we were right behind them.”

The Class 3A district will be hosted by Carroll at the Carroll Country Club, beginning at 10 a.m. Friday. The top two teams and four individuals advance to the Class 3A State Golf Tournament May 24-25 at Ames Golf & Country Club.

Matched with the qualifiers from Atlantic are the Humboldt and Spirit Lake teams, which shot 313 and 318, respectively, at Spencer. Ryan Gutz of Storm Lake was medalist with a 73 and Brett Bomgaars of MOC-Floyd Valley was runner-up with a 75.
