Creston District master contract approved, base pay increases $535

Creston School Board approved the district’s master contract in a special meeting Tuesday. The contract included changes to articles about health and safety, insurance, sick leave, and wages and salaries.

“We think, as the bargaining team, that we represented the districts needs well,” said Chuck Scott, interim superintendent. “The teachers were satisfied at the conclusion. … We recommend approval of the master contract.”

The salary base was increased by $535, making the new base $29,145. After the 2010-11 salary increase of $975 and teacher salary supplement of $4,531, the base for a first-year teacher in Creston totals $34,651. Instructors moving one step on the pay scale will receive the $525 base raise, plus $1,145, totalling approximately $1,680.

Article XVI, which covers wages and salaries, has a sentence added that states “an instructional coach will be paid for a master’s degree in educational leadership or in another content area if approved by the superintendent.”

Several paid positions were added to the district. Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) instructor will receive $1,918. The instructor for Creston Middle School student government will receive $2,145. The assistant bowling coach at Creston High School will receive $1,918.

Article IV, health and safety, changes state that the article will be deleted and Creston Schools will follow Iowa state law. Currently, Creston Schools requires a physical upon initial employment, and every three years following. State law requires the initial physical upon employment, but no physicals following. Also, bus drivers must complete an annual physical.

Article V states that the current district and association “will create an insurance study team to investigate insurance options and make recommendations to the association and district bargaining teams during the 2013-14 contract year.”

Article VI, which covers sick leave, will have an addition included that states “employees shall be eligible to use up to five days of their paid sick leave in relation and proximate to the adoption/birth of a child (other than a step-child).”

Boardmember Rich Flynn made a motion to approve the 2013-14 master contract, and Boardmember Galen Zumbach seconded the motion. The motion passed unanimously.
