Memorial Day is a great time to have a little fun

The first big holiday weekend of the summer is coming right up. Memorial Day is the kick off to summer.

As always, it’s a good time to remember our loved ones who have left us.

Although it seems like summer was a long time coming this year with snow still hanging around in early May, the farmers have been going full bore the past couple of weeks to make up for the slow spring start.

Light up the barbecue and have some fun this weekend. After the long winter you never know if we may end up with a short summer. So, take advantage.

Hot dogs

I see Oscar Mayer is coming out this weekend with a bacon hot dog. The new concoction is only 130 calories per dog. It should be something that is worth giving a try this Memorial Day weekend.

The folks at Oscar Mayer are also now making gluten-free hot dogs and a new fat-free hot dog. So, you hot dog lovers will have all sorts of new items to try out. Be the first in your neighborhood to put a bacon dog on top of a hamburger to have a bacon dog burger! I’m sure a nice slice of American cheese on top would finish it off in fine shape.

More dogs

Not just dogs, but pets of all kinds. I read a survey that gives the percentage of households that have pets. It’s interesting reading.

Iowa has a rate of 53.6 percent households with animals, which looks to be a little below average for the nation. The lowest percentage is in Washington, D.C., which only has 21.9 percent of the households with pets. The highest state is Vermont with 70.8 percent of households with animals. The lowest two states are Massachusetts with 50.4 percent and Nebraska with 51.3 percent.

The late-in-the-season snow days has extended some of the school districts in the area until after Memorial Day. I have heard from one teacher the kids are already getting a little “antsy” with the nice weather starting to move in.

I see they have started working on the baseball field at Creston High after last year’s tornado. It will be good to see the field back in action once the building and grounds are completed.

Health care

The impending Obamacare sure has a lot of people wondering what is going to happen with health care. Just about every hospital person I talk to coast to coast says the number of people in the hospitals or the number of hours people are working has been cut back.

Most hospitals are preparing for the lesser amounts of money they will receive coming up.

It’s going to be a long couple of years trying to figure out what is up with health care under the new plan. It looks like the younger folks are going to take the brunt of the new charges with some 25-34 year olds looking at premium increase of 25 to 50 percent to make up for some of the older people’s premiums.

The new sign up starts Oct. 1 of this year.

I’ve been out planting a couple of trees this week. The sub soil seemed to be pretty moist about a foot or so down. I hope the darn things grow fast. They are only about two feet tall to start. Maybe by the time I retire they will be 10-15 feet tall.

Thought for the week: One can not be an American by going about saying that one is an American. It is necessary to feel America, like America, love America and then work. — Georgia O’Keeffe
