DES MOINES — Murray junior Kate Patton needed her own personal shuttle bus to get her around from event to event Thursday at the Coed State Track and Field Meet.
Patton competed in all four of her events on Thursday, all in a span of about three hours.
She started her day off by winning her heat in the 100 meter dash prelims and qualifying in second place for finals with a time of 12.67. Ellie Herzberg of Manson Northwest Webster ran the fastest time in prelims with a 12.60.
Patton then went to the Class 1A long jump competition, where she had to take her three preliminary jumps in quick succession in order to get to the 200 meter dash prelims.
She jumped 16-3 in the prelims, qualifying for finals in that event. She then ran the third-fastest time in prelims of the 200 meter dash at 25.83.
Herzberg, again, ran the fastest time at 25.53. Lenox’s Aurora Arevalo finished 12th in 27.17.
“She’s really good,” Patton said of Herzberg. “I’ve ran against her since my freshman year. She’s just a junior, too. It’ll be Interesting (finals). It’s just whoever wants it more is going to take it.”
Herzberg then won the 400 meter dash in a state meet record time of 55.75 as Patton finished fifth in 59.77 and Lenox sophomore Katie Dukes finished seventh in 1:00.46.
Then, it was back to long jump for Patton, as she still had three more jumps in finals. Her mark of 16-3 from the prelims stood as her best jump, as she finished eighth to earn her second medal of the day.
“I’ve trained and practiced for this,” Patton said about her busy day. “I knew exactly what I was going to have to do, so I was pretty well prepared. It was just getting in the right spot at the right time and staying focused. Once I did that, I knew I was going to be fine.”
Patton will run finals of the 100 meter dash at 12:15 p.m. on Saturday and finals of the 200 meter dash at 1:25 p.m. Saturday.
Murray sophomore Seth Nerness placed 10th in the 100 meter dash, 16th in the 200 meter dash and 13th in the long jump.
Corning senior Tiffany Shepherd placed sixth in the Class 1A 3,000 meter run with a time of 11:01.94.
It marked the best finish of Shepherd’s career at state in the 3,000 meters.
Shepherd started off in the back of the pack before moving up to 10th place at the halfway point and into eighth place with 800 meters to go.
She picked off one more runner on each of the final two laps to get sixth.
“I thought it went really great today,” Shepherd said. “I just tried to run my own race. I knew they’d probably go out fast, so I just tried to stay back and relax, and it really worked out for me. I felt really comfortable about where I was at, just trying to knock off girls every chance I could get.”
Shepherd said she wanted to break the Corning school record in the event, but even though she came up short, was very happy with her time.
The Mount Ayr boys 4x800 relay team of Kyle Dolecheck, Heath Evans, Erik Freed and Noah Larsen did accomplish its goal of breaking a school record, however.
The Raiders finished sixth in Class 2A, earning a medal, with their new school record time of 8:11.14.
“We all ran pretty well,” Larsen said afterward. “We were going for the school record and beat it by six seconds, I think.”
Mount Ayr took advantage of the good running weather and put together its best performance.
Dolecheck, a freshman, opened up with a solid first leg to put the Raiders in third place.
“I was just trying to stay behind Monticello, keep up with them,” Dolecheck said. “But, they got me at the end there.”
“He ran a solid race,” Evans said. “I just tried to stay pace, because I knew Monticello was trying to pull away. I gave it to Freed and and Freed covered good ground and got us up there for Noah.”
Freed used a strong surge down the backstretch of his second lap to pick off several other teams and Larsen closed with a good anchor leg to give the Raiders sixth.
Dolecheck also finished 14th in the 400 meter dash, running 52.29.
