The Creston/O-M boys golf team and the tennis doubles team of Colby Taylor and Bryce McIlravy are involved in state tournament action this weekend.

The boys golf team returns to the Ames Golf and Country Club for the second time in three years for the Class 3A golf tourney. Taylor and McIlravy will participate in the Class 1A doubles competition at Byrnes Park Tennis Complex in Waterloo.

Creston/O-M is one of nine teams in the 3A golf field, which includes defending champion Decorah, runner-up Clear Lake and Hawkeye 10 rival Atlantic. Creston/O-M nosed out Atlantic for district honors on the fifth individual score tiebreaker after both teams shot 304 at the district tournament in Carroll.

Tee-of times in the state tourney are noon Friday and 8 a.m. Saturday. Results will be posted daily at

Decorah looks to defend its title after shooting 299 in district play, tops among the qualifiers.

Centerville is in this year’s field, led by sophomore Alex Moorman, who won the individual crown as a freshman with a 73-74 — 147 on the par-71 course in Ames.

Decorah has three players returning from last year’s title group — Michael Peter (tied for ninth), Bryce Pierce (tied for 12th) and Peter Kephart.

Clear Lake returns four from its runner-up lineup, including Dan Waldron (tied for 15th) along with Jon Carew, Tommy Schick and Treslyn Allison.

Other returning medalists in the field are Creston/O-M’s Carson Whittington (fifth) and Williamsburg Drew Slings (11th).

Whittington, a junior, is one of four Panthers who played at state two years ago. The others are seniors Trey Thomsen and Kainen Somers and junior Hunter Sickels. They are joined in this year’s lineup by sophomores Sam Hartsock and Christian Groumoutis.

Whittington has medaled twice at state in his first two seasons, scoring 154 as an eighth-place freshman. He improved by three positions and two strokes a year ago, shooting two 5-over rounds of 76.

Atlantic is led by senior Travis Olsen and junior Evan Schuler, who shot 69 and 72 at the district meet. Whittington birdied the first playoff hole to beat Olsen for district medalist honors.

Taylor and McIlravy commence action in the doubles competition Friday shortly after the 8:30 a.m. coaches meeting.

Class 1A’s top returnees include Aaron Chalstrom of Fort Dodge St. Edmond, who has finished runner-up in each of the past three years, and Keokuk’s fifth-place doubles team of Gabe Vandenberg and Dan Williams. Red Oak’s Pete Walker is considered a state contender in singles after placing fourth last year.

Atlantic has two doubles teams in the state tourney. The duo of Tyler Fischer and Noah Walter won a district title over Jake Areson and Adam Wieser.

The Norwalk team of Austin LaVelle and Grant Wright topped Taylor and McIlravy in a close district championship match.

There are 16 entries in both singles and doubles this weekend, with eight medals awarded in each category. There is no admission charge.
