New park in Corning to house Freedom Rock

CORNING — Corning Community Schools fifth- and sixth-grade students attended a presentation about the Adams County Freedom Rock project. They learned the city of Corning was taking an empty lot and designating it as a new park that will house the Freedom Rock. They also discussed how the rock will honor Adams County veterans and what qualities people who served in the military might have.

Students then brainstormed ideas for the new park name and came up with 15 different ideas. The students drew pictures of what they would like to see on the rock to honor Adams County veterans and wrote a short paragraph on which park name they preferred and why. These are all on display at the Lauvstad Center, 710 Davis Ave., in Corning and will be up through Memorial Day.

The Freedom Rock Committee discussed the park name ideas and selected one of those as the new park name. They had a special celebration with the students to reveal the new name before taking it for approval to Corning City Council.

The new park, which will be located on Sixth Street in downtown Corning, is “Memorial Rock Park.”

Adams County Economic Development was awarded a $4,565 Keep Iowa Beautiful Grant to complete the park.
