Time change

Starting times have been changed for Creston’s baseball games against Council Bluffs St. Albert on June 29.

Junior varsity action begins at 4 p.m., with varsity scheduled at 6:30 p.m.

GREENFIELD — Summer football activities have been announced by Nodaway Valley coach Steve Shantz.

Weekly practices are scheduled every Wednesday at 7 p.m. with workouts planned byi position. 7-on-7 scrimmages are scheduled on Wednesdays and Sundays, with times to be announced.

practice for the Simpson Camp and equipment checkout will be held the week of July 21. The Simpson Camp is held July 27-28 for incoming freshmen through seniors. Cost is $90.

The Nodaway Valley team camp for middle school and high school will be Aug. 5-9 from 5 to 8 p;m. at the high school. Cost is $45.

Included in the fee is a camp T-shirt, Gatorade each day and a pool party with barbecue on Friday.

Football practice starts on Aug. 12.

Smith in finals

Augustana College (Ill.) junior Kierra Smith of Creston qualified for finals in the 400 meter hurdles at the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships by finishing fifth in her preliminary heat with a time of 1:01.70, which is just off her school record of 1:01.56 set earlier this year. Smith has the ninth-fastest time entering finals.

Zabel dies

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — Jim Zabel, the broadcasting legend whose hyperbolic descriptions of University of Iowa sports teams entertained radio listeners for more than half a century, died Thursday at his Scottsdale, Ariz., home. He was 91.

His wife, Jill, said Jim was working in his office, preparing for his Sunday evening radio show, “Two Guys Named Jim,” which airs on WHO radio in Des Moines.

“He was very peaceful,” Jill said, “making calls for his radio show.”

In a career spanning nearly seven decades at WHO radio in Des Moines, Zabel was the colorful play-by-play voice for more than 6,100 sporting events, including six Rose Bowls, 26 NCAA basketball tournaments and several runnings of the Drake Relays.
