Panther golfers, Whittington claim state titles

AMES — Carson Whittington and the Creston/Orient-Macksburg boys golf team won a pair of state championships here Saturday at the Class 3A State Golf Tournament.

Whittington, ninth after day one of competition with his 18-hole score of 80 Friday, posted a round of 75 in the wind and rain on Saturday to post a one-stroke victory over Centerville's Alex Moorman, Clear Lake's Dane Waldron and Decorah's Michael Peter.

Whittington's two-day, 36-hole score was 155.

With Whittington's individual victory and Hunter Sickels and Trey Thomsen tying for 10th place with their scores of 161, the Panthers also won the team championship by three strokes over defending champion Decorah, 647-650.

Sophomore Sam Hartsock also counted in the team scoring for the Panthers, finishing 33rd overall with a score of 170. Sophomore Christian Groumoutis finished in a tie for 35th with a score of 171 and senior Kainen Somers finished in a tie for 44th with a score of 174.

The Panthers trailed in the team score by three strokes entering play on Saturday.
