This open area is where construction on Creston Elementary and Middle schools' safe room began in mid-April. The safe room will house a gymnasium with hardwood floors and bleachers.

The safe room at Creston Elementary and Middle schools is coming along safely.

“Construction is proceeding at the elementary and middle school,” said Roy Stroud, Creston School District business manager.

There was a short delay in construction at the middle school because of weather, but building is back on track.

“Any other construction is pretty tightly controlled,” Stroud said. “So it’s inspected every step of the way. They just absolutely have to do it the right way.”

Stroud said he believes “the footings are in, so it’ll continue and one of these days you’ll see it spring out of the ground.”

Construction at the elementary and middle school building started in mid-April, and is projected to finish after Jan. 1, 2014.

Breiholz Construction of Des Moines is building the safe room at the elementary and middle school.

“Eventually, it will have a hardwood gym floor and bleachers, and that type of stuff,” Stroud said. “That’ll all be extra cost to the district.”

Construction has not started at Creston High School for a safe room there.

Details are still being finalized for the room, which will be designed to include classrooms. Ball Team of Urbandale could start construction at the high school as early as Monday, and it is projected to be complete in mid-March.

The safe rooms are being built because of a Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) grant Creston School District received after the April 2012 tornado.

The grant pays for 75 percent of the cost of the rooms, while the state pays 10 percent and the school district pays 15 percent.

The safe room at the elementary and middle school will cost the school district approximately $425,000.

The safe room at the high school will cost approximately $215,000.
