Creston PTO treasurer takes $20,000 from organization

The treasurer of Creston’s Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) misappropriated more than $20,000 from the organization — this according to a complaint and affidavit released by the Union County Sheriff’s office this morning.

Danielle DeeAnn Smallwood, 40, of Creston was charged on a warrant for second-degree theft — a class C felony. Smallwood allegedly used the PTO account and funds for personal use while serving as PTO treasurer between October 2010 and April 2013.

“We discovered this money missing when we changed officers in May,” said Brad Baker, Creston Schools elementary principal. “It was through the leadership of other PTO officers, law enforcement and the bank that we made this discovery. We’ve met and the PTO has established more policies, very stringent policies, to ensure all money raised goes toward the kids at Creston Schools.”

Smallwood was released on $10,000 bond.

Moving forward, the incoming president of Creston’s PTO is Tonya Strong. Baker said the new officers have strong leadership and have put policies in place to make sure this doesn’t happen again and that all funds raised meet the mission of the organization.
