Auditions for performance of ‘Maybe, Baby, It’s You’

Published: Thursday, June 13, 2013 9:35 a.m. CDT

CORNING — A group of local volunteers is working to revive the community theater in Adams County. Sixteen locals showed up last Thursday night to read through scripts, discuss the possibilities of bringing community theater back to life, and went so far as to commit to putting together a modified readers’ theater production July 19 at the Corning Opera House stage.

Since that meeting, another 25 individuals have called in to say they also want to participate. With this much enthusiasm and a short amount of time, auditions have been scheduled 5 to 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, 3:30 to 7 p.m. Friday and 5 to 7:30 p.m. Sunday at the Corning Opera House.

The performance will be a modified readers’ theater with minimal memorization. Some costuming, stage design and makeup will be used. A few songs will be added to bring the show together.

“Maybe, Baby, It’s You,” a comedy by Charlie Shanian and Shari Simpson, has been selected. It is a comedy about the search for that most elusive of entities, the soul mate and told in a series of 10 vignettes that cover ground from the first kiss to the no-so-golden years of marriage.

The play may consist of 14 male actors and 11 female actors, singers, costumes, makeup, tech support and stage hands.

The story takes a ride through male-female relationships with two searchers with a laundry list of must-have qualities for a mate that swiftly dwindles down to “warm and breathing” as the only prerequisite; a mild-mannered Midwesterner whose blind date turns out to be the Greek Goddess Medea; a film noir couple who realize their razor-sharp banter is hiding their fear and vulnerability, a gorgeous, charming brain surgeon who is always “Mr. Wrong” and more.

Beth Waddle will be directing the play. To sign up for an audition time, sign up to help, or for more information, email her at eawaddle@yahoo.com or leave a message at 712-621-7133.
