Trojan coach

ATLANTIC — Alan Jenkins is the new boys basketball coach at Atlantic, after Creston native Steve Blazek announced his resignation earlier this spring.

Jenkins is a 2003 graduate of Atlantic High School and son of longtime Atlantic girls coach Don Jenkins. For the past five years, Jenkins has been a teacher and assistant basketball coach, assistant football coach and head track coach at Council Bluffs Abraham Lincoln High School.

Jenkins played for Blazek at Atlantic and credits him as a mentor in areas such as scouting and program organization. His father led the Atlantic girls basketball program for 26 years, amassing 4443 victories during a career that earned him induction into the Iowa Girls Athletic Coaches Association Basketball Hall of Fame in 2004.

The Trojans will lose their top seven scorers from a 22-2 team to graduation, including all-staters Dalton Franken and Sam Markham.

Chamber golf

The 16th annual Creston Chamber of Commerce Four-Person Best Shot Golf Tournament will be held July 12 at Pine Valley and Crestmoor Golf Club.

Reservations are due June 28. The tournament is listed to the first 36 teams. Cost is $250 for golf, lunch and taco bar for a team of four. Carts are included for those who need team.

Individually, cost is $63 and the Chamber will match up golfers to form a team.

Taco bar or lunch only for spouses and friends is $8 each. Hole sponsorships are $100 each.

For more information contact Ellen Gerharz at the Chamber of Commerce, 641-782-7021, or send registrations to Creston Chamber of Commerce, P.O. Box 471, Creston, Iowa 50801.

Wrestling changes

The Iowa High School Athletic Association and Iowa Wrestling Coaches Association advisory committee are discussing a change to the high school postseason format.

It involves the possible elimination of Class 2A and 1A sectional meets. That would remove one Saturday of competition and could result in the dual tournament moving ahead a week, as well has larger district meets.

The study is expected to be complete in time for the April 2014 coaches’ committee meeting.

Coed softball

Anyone interested in forming a coed softball team should contact league commissioner Cody Downing at 641-344-7576.
