Fred Barker — Mount Ayr

Frederick “Fred” Barker, 67, of Mount Ayr died June 17, 2013, at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines.

Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Friday, June 21, at Watson-Armstrong Funeral Home, 205 W. Monroe St., Mount Ayr. The Rev. Michael Maddy will officiate. Burial will be in Benton Cemetery. Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Memorials may be given to Ringgold County Ambulance Service. Online condolences may be left at www.watsonarmstrongfh.com.

Frederick “Fred” Barker, son of Lois (Vogel) and Weldon Barker, was born Feb. 25, 1947, in Mount Ayr.

Fred graduated from Mount Ayr High School in 1966. After high school, Fred attended Des Moines Vocational School, learning a machinist program. He began working as a telephone installer for Western Electric in 1968.

On April 18, 1970, Fred married JoAnn Kloppenborg in O’Neil, Neb. They moved to Omaha, Neb., and settled down, while Fred installed telephone equipment in Nebraska, Iowa, Minnesota and South Dakota. His job was transferred to Salt Lake City, Utah, and then back to Omaha, Neb.

In 1976, Fred hired on with Hobart Sales and Service in Omaha, Neb., and was transferred to Lincoln, Neb.

Fred retired in 2011, and shortly after that, he and JoAnn moved to the Barker family farm in Mount Ayr.

Fred is survived by his wife JoAnn; daughter Tricia (husband Todd) Simonsen and granddaughter Ashley Suzanne Barker-Chandler of York, Neb.; daughter Christina Barker of Lincoln, Neb.; and sister Marilyn Sue (husband Dale) Eichenberger of Robins.

Fred was preceded in death by his parents; a sister and two brothers-in-law.
