The Creston baseball team learned which teams it would be grouped with for postseason play on Friday, when the Iowa High School Athletic Association announced the Class 3A baseball substate groupings.
Creston will be joined by all of the other Class 3A Hawkeye 10 Conference schools — Atlantic, Denison-Schleswig, Glenwood and Harlan — along with Carroll, Greene County and Winterset, forming Substate 8.
Creston and Harlan have been chosen as the hosts for district games in Substate 8.
“It’s going to be tough, but as I told the guys, one of the nice things is we’re hosting the district,” Creston head coach Steve Birchard said. “It depends on who is the No. 1 seed, but I would guess maybe Glenwood and Harlan would be one and two. Harlan’s hosting the other district, so that would mean we’d end up with Glenwood. After that, it’s kind of a fruit basket upset and who’s playing who.”
By the time postseason play rolls around, Creston will have played five of the other seven teams, having not seen only Carroll and Greene County.
Creston still has regular season games remaining against Atlantic, Glenwood and Winterset.
“We know we can play with these people, and then we get them at home,” Birchard said. “We want to be sharpening ourselves as we go through the rest of the season, winning as many games as we can the rest of the season and performing at peak in the postseason. Bring on Glenwood, bring on Harlan and those people. You get through substate and guess what, then you’re at state, which is the goal.”
The host of the Substate 8 final is yet to be determined.
