Chuck Scott of Council Bluffs has been Creston interim superintendent during the 2012-13 school year, after Tim Hood, previous superintendent, resigned in September. Scott’s final day is June 30. Steve McDermott of Newton will be Creston superintendent starting July 1.

Q: What have you thought of your experience at Creston Schools?

A: “I enjoy what I do,” said Scott. “I love being around people. I think the Creston staff and the Creston community accepted me readily, made me feel very comfortable here. ... I think that they are appreciative of the things, the way in which, I’ve worked with the staff, and maybe guided the district. I don’t know that I’ve done a whole lot yet, but my main goal was to keep the ditsrict moving in a direction, getting people on board with where we’re going.”

Q: What is your lasting impression of Creston?

A: “I am impressed by the dedication of staff, and staff means cooks, bus drivers, paras, as well as teachers and administrators. People are here for kids. I like that,” Scott said. “I think the board made a wise selection in Mr. McDermott. I’m very excited about his style and leadership, his commitment to education and children. They’ll be in good hands with him.”

Q: What are your plans for retirement?

A: “Retirement for me means you have the ability to give up some of the day-to-day challenges and scheduling. And, you get to focus more on the things that are more important to you,” said Scott. “What’s important to me is I try to do quite a bit of reading. I haven’t sat down with just a book in about six months.”

Scott also said he plans on volunteering in the community, traveling with his wife and playing golf.

“I can play a good game of golf from time to time,” said Scott. “You could put in there I talk a better game than I play.”
