From Roger Nurnberg, Creston Pyrotechnic Association president

Creston

To let everyone know, the Creston Pyrotechnics Team, AKA “The Shooters,” are right on schedule with the 10,000 Crestonians show for the Fourth of July. We have had an interesting season in that some of our members, after many years of building beautiful devices for your enjoyment, have decided to take time off and leave it to the younger guys and gals. Yes, we have female members, too. We also have a very successful junior membership program for those who are not yet 18.

The Creston Pyrotechnic Association presently has 12 active members, not only from Creston, but from areas around as far away as West Des Moines. The Shooters are legally licensed by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives as manufacturers, which gives the team the latitude to make the Crestonian show unique and to stretch your donation dollar as far as we can. Members range from those who are just interested in pyrotechnics to those who wish to practice the fine art of filling the sky with color. Dues are only $10/year individual and $15/year family. Our funding comes entirely from donations.

All active members go through training to meet national standards set up by the National Fire Protection Association. Tuition is sponsored by the club from donations. The lead shooters, who we call display operators, actually become certified, even though Iowa is not a state requiring licenses. Some of our members are even licensed in adjoining states.

Members volunteer for any shows they may want to work on, after they receive their personal ATFE clearance, while a few others are “support crew” (which is important, too). The Shooters do several other shows each year as a means of supporting the surrounding communities, as well as individual family reunions, wedding celebrations, birthdays and anniversaries. This year we are also helping the city of Clarinda, city of Greenfield and Adams County Speedway. But the 10,000 Crestonian show will always be our pride and joy.

We want to take this opportunity to thank those who have helped put our pyrotechnics together in the past and invite anyone with an interest to contact us for a membership application. For those who just like to follow the Shooters, you can find us on Facebook at http://www.facebook.com/pages/Creston-Shooters-Pyrotechnics-Association/334671797486?fref=ts.
