GLENWOOD — Glenwood maintained a share of first place in the Hawkeye 10 baseball race with a 10-4 victory over Creston Monday night.

The Panthers outhit the Rams, 10-9, but were hampered by four errors resulting in three unearned runs. An outfield error with two outs in the second inning led to one unearned run, followed by an RBI single for a 4-0 early deficit.

Keaton Hulett took the loss, giving up seven earned runs. Sophomore Wyatt Schulz was the winner, despite yielding 10 hits with no strikeouts.

“We hit the ball on the nose several times,” said Creston coach Steve Birchard. “But their hits were timely. We can’t seem to put our hits together to score more than one run in an inning. And, we can’t be giving away runs defensively.”

Cole Crawford was 3-for-4 for the Panthers and Hulett had two hits, with another hard shot to right-center ending with a running catch by the Ram center fielder.

Glenwood improved to 20-4 overall and 13-1 in the Hawkeye 10. Carroll Kuemper also has one conference loss, but has played fewer games to date.

Creston, now in fifth in the conference at 8-9 and 11-13 overall, hosts Red Oak tonight and Treynor on Wednesday. That non-conference game will include a salute to veterans, and the Panthers will wear their camouflage cancer awareness jerseys.

Creston scored five runs in the second inning to take a 6-0 lead on the way to defeating the Glenwood JV, 8-5.

Winning pitcher Chase Shiltz had 12 strikeouts in six innings. He allowed five runs on eight hits with two walks.

“It seemed like Chase would come up with a big strikeout most of the time when they had something going,” Creston coach Kyle Wilson said. “It was a good win for us. They were a pretty good team, up and down the lineup.”
