Fondeen Westphal, 100, of Creston died June 28, 2013, at Greater Regional Hospice Home.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday, July 5, at the United Methodist Church in Bridgewater. Interment will be in Massena Center Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to service Friday at the church. Roland-Ritchie Funeral Home, 905 Benton Ave., Corning, is in charge of arrangements. Memorials may be given in Fondeen’s name to a charity of choice. Online condolences may be left at www.ritchiefuneralhome.com.

Fondeen Westphal, daughter of Louise (Thomas) and Cecil Beckwith, was born March 15, 1913, in Mount Etna.

Fondeen grew up on the family farm near Mount Etna and graduated from Corning High School. Fondeen then attended nursing school in Iowa City.

On July 11, 1936, Fondeen married Albert Westphal in Bedford.

Fondeen and Albert started their married life together on a farm seven and a-half miles south of Massena. They lived there until 1949. At that time, they moved into the Fontanelle area. They farmed there for a few years before finally moving to a farm south of Bridgewater in 1952.

Fondeen was a farmer’s wife. She worked side by side with Albert in the fields, while also raising chickens, a garden and taking care of the household duties.

Fondeen was a member of The Eastern Star in her earlier years.

Fondeen is survived by her daughters, Marjie Ann Westphal of Omaha, Neb., and Fern (husband Tim) Himberger of Indian Harbor Beach, Fla.; brother Tom Beckwith of Laguna, Calif.; sister-in-law Esther Smart of Corning; grandchildren, Richard (wife Stephanie) Slattery of Council Bluffs, Robert Slattery of Melbourne, Fla., and Ronald (wife Kathy) Slattery of Joseph; along with many nieces, nephews, family and friends.

Fondeen was preceded in death by her parents; husband; sisters, Violet, Gladys and Marjorie; brothers, Theodore and wife Blanche, Clesson and wife Bertie and Duane and wife Wilma; sisters-in-law, Eleanor and Margaret Beckwith and son-in-law Ronald Slattery Sr.
