Southwestern Community College Board of Directors passed an increase in tuition and fees and appointed a new board member at the monthly board meeting Tuesday.

Tuition and fees

It was approved to increase tuition 4 percent for residents and 4.2 percent for nonresidents. The increase will go into effect fall 2014.

“We are proposing an increase of $6 per resident credit hour and $6.50 per nonresident credit hour starting for next fall,” said Teresa Krejci, chief financial officer. “That would increase our tuition fees to $154 total tuition fees.”

It was also approved to increase the nursing RN fee by $5 for the transcript to be submitted for the licensing exam. The total fee will be $225, increased from $220.

The nursing LPN fee will increase $5 for the transcript and $10 to receive the certificate for a mandatory training that is provided. The total fee will be at $175, a $15 increase from $160.

An increase of $6 for technology and lab fees for certain classes was approved. This fee will cover extra costs for additional equipment, technology, lab environment, supplies and safety considerations. Welding classes will have an increase of $16 because of the cost of the program.

There will be a new fee for online content of either $67 or $117, depending on the online course. This fee was approved to make it easier and less complicated for students to access online content, rather than going to external websites, using access codes and syncing course work with the appropriate class.

“We believe this increase will continue to help us provide opportunities and open doors for students for successful employment, and quality of education is paramount in our decisions, and we believe this increase is needed to continue the standards that we’ve set,” Krejci said.

The increase of tuition and fees passed unanimously.

Board member

A board committee comprised of Ken Rech, Tony Cass and Jerry Smith recommended the board of directors appoint Carol Saxton of Leon as a new board member to replace Susan Lane of Leon, who resigned June 11.

The board accepted the recommendation unanimously. Saxton will be on the board until the September election.
