Corning 9,

Villisca 0

CORNING — For one team, the game spelled the end of an athletic program, while the other survived to play another day.

Corning defeated Villisca 9-0 here Monday in the battle of teams that will join forces next year as one school.

Ella Akin allowed just three hits with one walk, while striking out 11 in the win. She helped her own cause at the plate, going 1-for-4 with one RBI and two runs scored.

Ashtyn Grossnickle was 1-3 with two RBI, while Kelsey Anstey and Sydney Pontius each drove in one run. Pontius was 2-3 with a pair of doubles. Taylor Gaule went 1-4 with a stolen base and a run scored.

“We came out tonight in our first regional game and played extremely well in every aspect,” Corning head coach Allen Naugle said. “Ella had a dominating performance pitching tonight. She had complete control all night.

“When Villisca hit the ball, our defense played extremely well behind her, committing zero errors,” he continued. “We hit the ball very well tonight, and were able to put Villisca into some tough situations and took advantage of errors. We will be going up against a very good Lenox team next, but we are playing very well and have a lot of confidence.”
